Crossword grids

I guess I've noticed over the years that there are different types of crossword grids, but I never realised that they actually have names which link them to various countries.  I reckon the British style ones would be harder to complete than the US style since there are less overlapping squares (the US ones actually require that every letter has to be part of both a down and an across word).
